Osteopathy
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a recognised primary healthcare profession that focuses on how your whole body works together, not just on isolated symptoms. Osteopaths are trained to look at the body as one connected system and to find and treat the root cause of your problem, rather than simply managing the pain it creates.
Some of the key principles behind osteopathy are:
The body has the ability to heal itself
Structure and function are closely connected
Good fluid movement is essential for good health
Osteopathic treatment is gentle, hands-on, and suitable for everyone, from babies and children to adults and seniors.
How can it help you?
Osteopathy offers a holistic approach that can be used to treat the entire body. It can help with both sudden (acute) and ongoing (chronic) issues, and it’s also an excellent option for maintaining good health and preventing problems in the long term.
What to expect…
Your first appointment is all about getting to know you and understanding what your body needs. We’ll begin with a relaxed, in-depth conversation about your medical history, lifestyle and any symptoms or concerns you’re experiencing. This helps us see the full picture, not just the area that’s troubling you.
We’ll then carry out a physical assessment, which may include looking at your posture, how you move, and any areas of discomfort or restriction. You may be guided through a few simple movements so your osteopath can observe how your body works as a whole and how different areas may be influencing one another.
Once the assessment is complete, your osteopath will clearly explain what they’ve found and talk through a treatment plan that’s tailored specifically to you and your goals. If appropriate, treatment can begin during your first visit. This may involve gentle, hands-on techniques such as soft tissue work, joint articulation or manipulation, and fascial release. Everything we do will be explained beforehand, and treatment will only go ahead with your full understanding and verbal consent.
There’s always time and space to ask questions throughout your appointment. Before you leave, we’ll also offer practical advice to support your recovery, which may include simple exercises, guidance on using heat or cold, and what to expect after treatment. We’ll finish by agreeing a clear plan together, with realistic aims to help you move more comfortably, confidently and sustainably.
